Decarbonizing our operations and value chain
To support the decarbonization and resilience of our operations and value chain, Johnson & Johnson has been setting and achieving public-facing climate-related goals for more than three decades. We have taken sustained, long-term action to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and we support our suppliers to do the same.

Our goals
Our near-term goals have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Source 100% of our electricity needs from renewable sources by 20251
Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 44% by 2030 from a 2021 base year1
80% of J&J suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services and upstream transportation and distribution will have science-based targets by 2028
In addition to our climate goals, we also have a longer-term ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2045.
Climate action plan at-a-glance
We continue to build on decades of climate action by reducing emissions across our global operations and engaging our suppliers in their decarbonization efforts.
Our operations
Advancing renewable electricity
We are proud that approximately 88% of our global electricity needs come from renewable sources. This includes 100% of the electricity for our operations1 in Europe2, the United States3 and Canada. We have completed 15 deals for off-site renewable electricity and maintain more than 40 on-site renewable energy systems on properties in 16 countries.
Delivering energy efficiency and low carbon technologies
Since 2005, we have allocated up to $40 million per year through our CO2 Capital Relief Program for energy projects at our sites that demonstrate potential CO2 savings and a financial return.
An example of a project supported by the Program is at our campus in Beerse, Belgium where we installed a state-of-the-art deep geothermal energy plant. Two wells, about 1.6 miles (2.4 km) deep, provide renewably sourced hot water for heating. The use of geothermal energy has reduced the carbon emissions for J&J Innovative Medicine operations in Belgium by around 30%.

Our value chain
Engaging our suppliers
We have been working for years with our suppliers on initiatives to help reduce our upstream emissions in support of our Scope 3 climate goal.
For example, through our Onward Program, we help educate suppliers on the business value and concrete actions they can take to decarbonize their operations.
Through the Energize Program, we are collaborating with peer companies to provide trainings and resources to support renewable electricity adoption for pharmaceutical suppliers. Additionally, as part of our ongoing work with Manufacture 2030 we collaborate with industry peers to engage active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) suppliers through the Activate program.

Environmental, social and governance resources
We believe continual improvement of our ESG management practices helps drive long-term value creation and strengthens our ability to respond to the needs and expectations of all stakeholders.
